As an artist, my portfolio showcases a diverse range of work. While I primarily focus on Western Art, I occasionally take on commissions. The following is a unique commission, a Reverse Perspective Painting, where I'd like to share some insights into the creative process

Patrick Hughes, born on October 20, 1939, is a distinguished British artist based in London. He is renowned as the originator of "reverspective," a captivating optical illusion technique employed on three-dimensional surfaces. In this remarkable style, the elements of the artwork that appear farthest away from the viewer are, in fact, physically the closest. This unique approach subverts the conventional rules of linear perspective, where closer objects typically appear larger, challenging viewers' perceptions and offering an intriguing and mind-bending visual experience in art. Hughes' pioneering work in reverspective has earned him acclaim in the art world for his innovative and thought-provoking creations.

Venice 3D Test

To ensure the flat reference image's effectiveness, I conducted a meticulous validation process. Leveraging Maya, a 3D application, I created an accurate 3D representation of the truncated pyramids and frame, maintaining precise scaling.
The Photoshop reference image was then UV-mapped onto this 3D model, incorporating realistic lighting. Subsequently, I generated a turntable animation, offering a comprehensive preview of the final painting.
This approach allowed me to present the completed artwork to the client, even before commencing the physical painting process, and effectively demonstrated the dynamic perspective effect viewers would experience when passing by the artwork.

Final Thoughts

The final artwork, when illuminated correctly and observed in person, is truly astonishing.

The eerie perspective appears to follow you seamlessly throughout the room, whether you move up, down, or side to side.

However, there were certain challenges. The use of a Mahl stick as a straight edge for all the straight lines was an incredibly time-consuming process.

Additionally, painting in the deep crevices presented its own set of difficulties.

Overall the Client was ecstatic!
